| With the Libertarian Party growing in Iowa, it will have two Council Bluffs residents on the ballot on Nov. 6.
Jake Porter of Council Bluffs defeated Marco Battaglia of Des Moines in the party’s gubernatorial primary election on Tuesday. Porter netted 962 votes — 54.38 percent — according to unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office. Battaglia finished with 678 votes, good for 38.33 percent. A total of 1,769 voters cast a ballot in the race, with 7 percent of the votes going toward write-ins. Porter is a business consultant and was the party’s executive director before stepping down to run for office, according to his campaign website. Bryan Holder of Council Bluffs ran unopposed in the Libertarian 3rd Congressional District primary, receiving 497 votes. He’ll move on to face incumbent Republican Rep. David Young and Democrat Cindy Axne, who won Tuesday’s three-person primary. The Libertarian Party achieved official political party status in Iowa in 2017 on the heels of the 2016 election. Gary Johnson, the party’s presidential candidate, received 3.8 percent of the total presidential vote in Iowa.
