BATAVIA — The Genesee County Libertarian Party will hear from some of its candidates for office and nominate new leaders for the county party when it holds its convention on Monday.
The convention will be take place 6:30 p.m. Monday at T.F. Brown’s Restaurant on Main Street and is open to the public.
County Libertarian Party Chairman Dave Olsen, whose term as chair is coming to an end, said the convention speakers will be lieutenant governor candidate Andrew Hollister; Mark Glogowski, candidate in the 139th Assembly District; and Chairman James Rosenbeck of the Libertarian Party of New York.
Libertarian candidate for governor Larry Sharpe visited Batavia in May to meet with local party members.
Glogowski, who had been Libertarian Party of New York chairman for the last three years before Rosenbeck began in April, said he hopes to be endorsed by the Libertarian Party to run for the seat currently held by Steve Hawley, who is also running again.
Glogowski said he also ran for the seat as a Libertarian in 2012 and 2014. He said in 2012, there were nearly no Libertarians in the county and in 2014, he expected to do a lot better in the election.
“I ran for the chairman of the Libertarian Party,” Glogowski said. “I wanted to change the culture. I wanted to get the party growing. When Jim Rosenbeck became chairman this year ... now that I’m not the chairman, I can focus on my own campaign again and I intend to do that.”
Olsen said electing a new county party chair will be among the business at Monday’s convention.
“I shall be resigning as soon as the next chair is elected,” he said. “We will be electing or re-electing the vice-chair. The secretary position is also up for election.
“Jim Rosenbeck has served in that capacity in addition to his duties as vice-chair of the LPNY for three years,” he continued. “He has now been elected as the LPNY chair and would rather someone else take over the duties of secretary. Many thanks to Jim for all his hard work and dedication to the (Genesee County Libertarian Party) and all the great things to come.”
According to Olsen, Rosenbeck has asked that each county Libertarian chapter designate a county coordinator for candidate petitioning efforts, which will begin on July 10 for statewide offices. The minimum number of signatures needed to get Sharpe on the ballot for governor is 15,000, Olsen said.
“We usually like to see at least 50 percent more (signatures) to reduce the chance of a challenge knocking us off the ballot,” he said. “Mark Glogowski, ... will need a minimum of 3,000 signatures.
“He wants to double that.” he continued. “The more petition signatures gotten by volunteers reduces the amount of paid petitioners the LPNY will need to hire. Finances are slim and every opportunity for savings is important.
“This also gives us all an opportunity to continue the outreach the GCLP has designated as our primary mission; you get to talk to registered voters about Larry Sharpe and Mark Glogowski along with the other statewide candidates and spread the message of liberty.”
