| Blacktown City Council on Wednesday night will cremate the last development application to be voted by its councillors in a dramatic protest against NSW Government changes to planning laws.
The council has prepared two urns for the “Ashes of Accountable Development”, with one to remain in council chambers as a “memorial to accountable decision-making” and the other will be presented to the NSW Planning Minister, Anthony Roberts.
From March 1 independent hearing and assessment panels (IHAPS) will decide on the fate of development applications (DAs) valued between $5 million and $30 million and a range of other conditions, instead of local government assessing future projects.
The panels, now mandatory for all Sydney councils, will comprise of four members; three independent experts with the chairperson also specialising in public government or law and the fourth as a community representative.
