| A week before the final report is due from a senate committee into the future of public interest journalism, media organisations are fighting government-proposed secrecy laws that they say threaten to criminalise crucial news reporting.
The new national security bill, which could jail anyone for up to 20 years for communicating or dealing with protected government information, is now the subject of a petition from the media union and has elicited a fierce response from award-winning journalists and news companies.
