| High performance 12-cylinder engines should last longer than 4- or 6-cylinder engines in an era where many are predicting the eventual demise of the internal combustion engine.
That prediction comes from Bentley member of the board for engineering, Rolf Frech, who believes the passion and performance of a 12-cylinder will live on in an era where electric propulsion is expected to grow exponentially.
Despite a trend towards downsizing – four-cylinders are regularly used in place of a six-cylinder these days, and V8 performance from a few years ago can be replicated with a V6 – Frech says the innovative W12 engine used in Bentleys is safe under his watch.
“It’s not only tradition it’s also the feeling you get whenever you drive in a 12-cylinder engine,” he said. “For me it’s still something that is unique. We at Bentley are the centre of excellence inside of the VW Group for 12-cylinders. We are producing all the 12-cylinders for all of the other brands.”
Frech said he believed smaller, more mainstream engine configurations would succumb to the shift to electric – it’ll be a slow process but most car makers believe electric cars will one day replace most cars powered by petrol and diesel engines – before the W12.
