Ferrari’s heavily-rumoured V6 model is unlikely to be an entry-level car priced under its circa-$400,000 Portofino convertible.

The brand’s range of V8 and V12 engines is expected to be joined by a new V6 variant, one that may be related to the Ferrari-designed motor at the core of Alfa Romeo’s Giulia QV.

Ferrari chief executive Sergio Marchionne told British reporters that a coupe positionined below the V8-powered 488 GTB is “a when, not an if”, and that the brand is determined to get the car right.

The car is rumoured to be named Dino in honour of Ferrari’s Dino-badged V6-powered 246GT of the 1970s, a car that was named after Enzo Ferrari’s son.

Speaking with reporters at the Frankfurt motor show, Nicola Boari, Ferrari’s head of product marketing, says a potential Dino model would arrive “not as a way to decrease the entry price” for the brand.
