| In a Gallup poll released Thursday, 20% of Americans cited the U.S. government as the most important problem facing the country this month. The poll, conducted August 2-6, asked respondents to give an open-ended answer to the question, “What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?” Those who answered "government" included open-ended responses with mentions of President Donald Trump, the Democratic Party, and government gridlock and politics in general. Seventeen percent of respondents said they believe health care is the most important problem facing our country, and 7% said illegal immigration and illegal aliens.
Eight percent of responders said the economy in general, while 7% said unifying the country. Other answers included race relations, unemployment and internal issues and problems. Although the recent escalation in tensions between the U.S. and North Korea occurred after the poll results were gathered, 4% of respondents said they believe the situation with North Korea is the most important issue. Results for the poll were based on telephone interviews of 1,017 adults living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
