| Lamborghini has left the door open for an even faster version of the Huracan Performante, the machine that recently lost the record for the fastest car around the fearsome Nurburgring circuit.
The Italian brand set a new benchmark around the 22km circuit earlier this year with the Huracan Performante stopping the clock at 6min 52sec - almost six seconds quicker than the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar that costs more than twice as much and more than 30 seconds quicker than the regular mid-engined machine on which it is based - which was eclipsed this month by the Chinese Nio EP9 fully-electric supercar.
It achieves the additional speed through conventional modifications to the suspension and steering, the fitment of stickier tyres and lighter bodywork but Lamborghini's head of research and development, Maurizio Reggiani, told Drive the majority is derived from active aerodynamics which opens and closes flaps in the front and rear wings to provide maximum downforce in the corners and reduced drag for higher straight line speeds.
While the Nurburgring result validates its track performance, Reggiani admits the car has been designed to have a wide dynamic bandwidth that still makes it liveable to drive in everyday situations.
