| ABOUT $20 million a year is being wasted on retaining hundreds of health bureaucrats whose jobs had been abolished, says the State Opposition.
The Health Minister, John Della Bosca, was also criticised during a budget estimates hearing yesterday for failing to have a briefing with his predecessor, Reba Meagher, or to meet key stakeholders since taking over the portfolio about a month ago.
Mr Della Bosca said a meeting with Ms Meagher was not necessary and instead he had spent time meeting frontline clinicians at hospitals rather than the heads of groups such as the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.
He conceded the so-called unattached list of Health Department employees had almost doubled from 145 to 270 in the past three years.
