| Subject: Entrepreneurship university courses: ticket to success or waste of money? Mon Jun 13, 2016 3:09 am | |
| The age of startups, innovation and entrepreneurs has triggered an increasing in universities offering degrees in entrepreneurship, but it's yet to be seen if the courses are successful.
Born out of the business schools of Australia's leading universities, including Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and University of Technology in Sydney, the courses are designed to create the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Businesses which received the entrepreneurial training were "unsuccessful and fail to produce tangible or subjective benefits"
Yet Small Businesses Australia CEO Peter Strong said he is "cynical" about the benefit of entrepreneurship courses.
"Is it really for entrepreneurs or is it just another way to get people into a course?" he said. "What does a degree in entrepreneurship mean? Is this just another name for the same thing?"
Whilst students are encouraged to think big when selecting their ideas for their final assignment, with a plan for a scalable business, it's unclear how many go on to create their ideas.
Campbell Mayne, a second-year entrepreneurial student at RMIT said that the course has taught him to tackle his ideas more methodically.
