A Newcastle father did not appear in court today and did not appeal for bail after being charged with murder over the death of a 34-year-old intruder who was believed to have been caught breaking his home.

Resident Ben Batterham allegedly found Richard James Slater standing over his daughter’s bed of the Cleary Street residence in Hamilton at 3.30am on Saturday.

Mr Batterham and another male, 32, reportedly assaulted and detained the alleged intruder and put him into a headlock before the incident was dragged out onto the street.
