ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Two men who helped engineer a secret Navy contract to build hundreds of untraceable rifle silencers are being sentenced in federal court.
Race-car mechanic Mark Landersman of Temecula, California, received the no-bid contract. Naval intelligence officer Lee Hall of Sterling was convicted of theft of government money for pushing the contract through.
Hall’s boss in the Navy was Landersman’s brother, David Landersman, who is also facing charges.
Hall and Mark Landersman were convicted back in 2014. Trial testimony indicated Mark Landersman was paid $1.7 million for silencers that cost only $10,000 to build. Tests showed that the silencers actually enhanced light and sound when weapons were fired.
The two, who will be sentenced Friday in federal court in Alexandria, claimed the silencers were needed for a classified project.
