| If you rely on more yoghurt or a calcium supplement to boost bone density the latest report on calcium's power to prevent fractures might seem like glum news. Extra calcium from either food or supplements produces only small (1 to 2 per cent) increases in bone mineral density – and that's unlikely to mean much reduction in fracture risk, a study published in The British Medical Journal last month concluded.
The trouble with this is that it assumes such a small gain in bone density isn't worth having – yet even a slight increase may help raise a person's bone density above the fracture threshold, Professor Caryl Nowson, of Deakin University's School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, says.
