| THE federal government has banned a controversial American anti-abortion activist from entering the country.
TROY Newman, who wrote a book calling for the execution of doctors who perform abortions, was due to visit Australia for a speaking tour from October 3. But Immigration Minister Peter Dutton in a statement on Wednesday said his department had cancelled Mr Newman's visa, although the decision could be appealed.
Labor MP Terri Butler said she was pleased the government had heeded her concerns.
Ms Butler had urged the cancellation of Mr Newman's visa on fears his visit could incite community harm and put women at medical clinics at risk of harassment.
"Anyone who advocates the execution of doctors or compares women who seek terminations to murderers clearly fails the Australian community's character test," she said in a statement.
Mr Newman posted a video documenting the moment he was told by airline staff he could not board a connecting flight from Denver to Los Angeles and then onward to Australia.
"So you listen to the Australian government versus the fact that I have a pre-checked ticket and preassigned seat from Denver to LA," he tells staff in the video.
"What are you afraid of?"
Mr Newman's group Operation Rescue is urging supporters to lobby the Australian embassy in Washington to overturn the decision.
The group blamed "viciously false accusations" for the visa cancellation.
