| Australian air strikes in Syria will do little to damage Islamic State so the motivation for authorising them appears to be political, one of the nation's top Middle East experts says.
The Abbott government is this week expected to sign off on plans to expand RAAF air strikes from Iraq to its even more dangerous neighbour Syria as the fight against IS grinds on.
The government says the United States requested Australia's involvement in an expanded air campaign, although Fairfax Media has reported it was actually Prime Minister Tony Abbott's office that pushed for the US request.
