According to the Texas Tribune, Perry’s campaign still believes they will be on stage.

With Fox News Channel’s Republican debate coming up in less than a week, there has been plenty of speculation regarding how the stage will be arranged on August 6 in Cleveland at 8:50 p.m. ET. That’s hardly an exact science and it’s not even clear what polls would be used, so expect Fox News to manipulate the selection process in deciding which of the candidates on the fringes will be allowed at the adult table.

With the Republican subject very large ever, laying these guys on stage comes with an remarkable mission. The terms of the debate state “the top 10 of an average of the five most recent national polls” will be invited. The top 10 was headed by Donald Trump at 18 percent, Jeb Bush at 15 and Scott Walker at 10. Maddow went on to ask Fox News “are you sure you want to run the presidential primary like this?” Her displeasure with how the debate is being shaped was evident in a conference call she did with supporters on Thursday. “This is a catch-22: They can’t be loved unless they are seen, but they can’t be seen unless they are already loved enough to make the big the debate”.

RNC chief strategist Sean Spicer wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion article this week that the “Republican Party suffers from an abundance of riches” and that a way has been found for all to get some debate time. “No. It is, however, the most inclusive setup in history”, he wrote.

So consider CNN’s latest survey of each candidate’s nationwide support among likely Republican voters, the sample of 419 people interviewed July 22-25, which had a margin of error of plus or minus five points.

The final two spots will be a battle between Chris Christie, John Kasich, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and Bobby Jindal. The rest will be banished to a second-tier debate held at 5 p.m., when viewership is much smaller. (Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, who became the GOP field’s 17th candidate on Wednesday, has yet to appear in a poll.). He is among the low-polling Republicans.
