| Subject: Going Clear's Alex Gibney on Scientology's 'brutal' treatment of Nicole Kidman Sat Jun 06, 2015 9:48 pm | |
| Oscar-winning documentary director Alex Gibney has confronted some powerful forces over abuses of power in the past decade. He challenged the American military over the torture of suspects (Taxi to the Dark Side), the Catholic Church over sexual abuse (Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God), WikiLeaks over its culture (We Steal Secrets: the Story of WikiLeaks) and cyclist Lance Armstrong over his drug cheating (The Armstrong Lie).
But when it came to examining the Church of Scientology in his latest documentary, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Gibney was still surprised by how badly its members treated Australian star Nicole Kidman, including tapping her phone calls as they tried to split up her marriage to Tom Cruise before their divorce in 2001.
Based on a bestselling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lawrence Wright, the film has some staggering revelations about abuse and control inside the famously litigious organisation that counts Cruise and John Travolta among its Hollywood members. It details how Scientology leader David Miscavige relies on star power to recruit new members and questions its tax-free status as a religion.
