A policeman is undergoing surgery after being run over by a fellow officer during an operation on the north coast of NSW.

Coffs Harbour police were pursing a car, which is believed to have been driven by two juveniles, that failed to stop near Emerald Beach on Saturday afternoon.

The chase continued for nearly eight kilometres through the usually quiet beachside towns of Woolgoolga and Sandy Beach before police were forced to lay down spikes across the road on Solitary Islands Way.

After the spikes successfully stopped vehicle, the two female occupants ran into a nearby property.
