| Subject: This mum fought a sexist pool party dress code at her son's school and won Fri May 22, 2015 4:17 am | |
| The mother of a sixth-grade boy has given her son's school a lesson on sexism, after he brought home a permission slip for a pool party that included an unsubtle girl-only dress code clause that implied their bodies are indecent, sexual, and need to be covered up (and no, a white t-shirt is not enough, because we all know sixth graders in wet t-shirts are just asking for trouble).
Jennifer Smith told The Huffington Post she was enraged by the clause: "They're saying little girls need to be ashamed of their bodies and cover themselves up."
"I have a little boy, I'm teaching him to think correctly, and this is contrary to what I'm teaching him," she said.
So she contacted the school for an explanation, and was told that there had been "inappropriate swimwear" at past pool parties and the t-shirt request was an "economic consideration" for parents who might not be able to afford to go out and buy their daughter a one piece. It can only be assumed that the inappropriate swimwear referred to is therefore a two piece. Which is fair enough, I mean remember Lolita?
