| The Minister for the Arts, George Brandis, has announced a $105 million cut to the Australia Council. Actually, it's more of an amputation – because these programs will survive, grafted on to the Department of the Arts, where Senator Brandis plans to take personal responsibility for them. Clearly, he regards himself as a cultured man, well qualified to play the patron on a national scale, but surely he doesn't believe he will occupy that seat forever? One wonders how enthusiastic he is going to be about the privilege passing to less august ministers, not necessarily of his own party, who will inevitably succeed him.
Meanwhile, how will the clients fare? Censorship can be discounted; the government would never consider any such thing. Would it? Good old arm's-length funding does have the advantage of being a buffer against direct political intervention.
