| More than 200 children suffering from mental health problems were locked up by the police in the UK last year. This was due to a lack of hospital beds, while some of them were as young as 12, according to figures seen by The Independent on Sunday. As many as 202 people under the age of 18 were detained by police under the Mental Health Act, some for up to two days, according to figures released under freedom of information requests. Although the vast majority did not pose a threat to the public, many were in danger of harming themselves or were suicidal. Police are allowed to lock someone up for up to 72 hours under section 136 of the Mental Health Act if there are no available places in hospitals or psychiatric units.
