| Children who fail to attend school have no chance in life, high profile Labor MP Maxine McKew says.
Ms McKew was commenting on her government's plan to suspend welfare payments to parents who don't send their children to school.
She said there was spirited debate in Labor's party room on Monday about the plan, to be trialled at eight sites in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and some MPs and senators were concerned about implementation of the scheme.
But Ms McKew, the parliamentary secretary for early childhood education and child care, said there was public concern about regular truants.
