| Foxtel and Australia's commercial free-to-air television networks have called on the Abbott government to rip up the present system for granting visas to foreign actors on Australia screen productions.
They echo similar calls by Screen Producers Australia, which says the current system doesn't permit the industry opportunities for growth in a global market and is in need of urgent reform.
But the industry faces stiff opposition from the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance. MEAA members, and actors, Susie Porter, Geoff Morrell and John Howard, met with senators on Tuesday to campaign against the government's proposal to cut requirements for taxpayer-funded productions to employ Australian actors and crew.
