Fairfax Media has struck a multi-year partnership with The Huffington Post Media Group to launch an Australian edition of the US-based news and opinion website, featuring a Sydney-based newsroom of editors and reporters.

Commercial terms are still being finalised but it is understood that Fairfax, the owner of The Australian Financial Review and BusinessDay, will have a 49 per cent interest in the venture with Huffington Post taking ultimate control, in keeping with its other international joint ventures.

HuffPost Australia will launch in the second quarter of calendar 2015 and is expected to have a staff of about 12 at launch, with the site getting access to agency briefs from Fairfax's advertising sales team. Set-up costs were not disclosed but are believed be well below $10 million.
