| The New York insider trading case against Australian research analyst Trent Martin and four co-accused is on the verge of collapse after a judge vacated the defendants' guilty pleas.
US District Court judge Andrew Carter could toss the entire case on Friday when he meets with the defendants' lawyers, ending a saga that began in 2009 when technology giant IBM made a secret $US1.2 billion takeover of Chicago software company SPSS.
Sydney-raised Martin, who lived in Manhattan and worked at the Bank of Scotland in 2009, was facing a maximum jail sentence of five years after pleading guilty in 2013 to conspiracy to commit securities fraud.
