China says four district officials have been sacked over a stampede on New Year's Eve in Shanghai's Bund district that left 36 people dead.

A report into the tragedy also said another seven officials should be disciplined.

The crush happened in Chenyi Square on the waterfront, where huge crowds had gathered for the countdown.

The victims were trampled and asphyxiated. Forty-nine other people were injured in the accident.

Turnout that evening was much higher than predicted and Shanghai police said they regretted their failure to intervene in time, state media reported earlier.
