| Nearly 400 Victorians are being urged to take an HIV test after being potentially exposed to the infectious disease through contact with a healthcare worker in the state’s east.
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Dr Rosemary Lester said the Department of Health had written to 399 people in eastern Victoria because they had been patients of the recently diagnosed health care worker.
She said while no one had contracted HIV from the worker, who ceased undertaking procedures on being diagnosed, the department was following up selected patients to recommend a precautionary blood test.
It is understood the town where the healthcare worker was practising is Bairnsdale. Eighty-four people have so far had tests, all of which returned a negative result.
‘‘This is entirely precautionary as there are no reports of any patient contracting HIV from the health care worker. But we are erring on the side of caution and recommending a blood test to rule out the presence of HIV,’’ the statement said.
