| Details of Porsche's new flat-eight powered supercar revealed, according to report.
Porsche is preparing to go toe-to-toe with arch rival Ferrari with a new mid-engined sportscar to sit between its top-end 911s and flagship 918 Spyder, according to a report in British magazine, Autocar.
The report suggests the famous German sportscar brand is developing a four-pronged family of sportscars based on a new modular set of components that will extend from the next-generation Boxster and Cayman twins through the successor to today’s 911 all the way to a new lightweight two-seater coupe to rival Ferrari’s 458 Italia.
It claims the new halo model is already under development with an internal codename of 988 and will be powered by a 4.0-litre flat eight-cylinder engine with four turbo chargers that can produce in excess of 450kW.
The top-secret machine is expected to be the first model to utilise Porsche’s new modular architecture and engine strategy and will go on-sale in 2017, says Autocar. Considering its position, it is likely to sit above the existing 911 Turbo variants in both price and performance but, to challenge the 458 Italia, will be around half the price of the million-dollar, hybrid-powered 918 Spyder.
