| At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking that religious extremism and women’s sexual objectification have anything in common. After all, the latter tends to be presented as an antidote to the puritanical moral values so often proscribed by religious fundamentalism.
But in the unsettling documentary film The World Before Her by Indian-Canadian director Nisha Pahuja, these two seemingly disparate worlds are brought crashing together.
In Mumbai, 20 young women vie to be crowned Miss India 2011. It’s a frivolous but cutthroat world of bikinis, botox and skin bleaching. Meanwhile, dozens of other girls are hard at it in a bootcamp of an altogether different kind: Durga Vahini, the women’s wing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, the extreme nationalist movement locally referred to as the “Hindu Taliban”.
