You could call American director Richard Linklater's latest film his regular part-time job. While making about 10 other films, including School of Rock, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, he returned briefly every year to shoot scenes for an under-the-radar drama in Texas.

Shot over 12 years, Boyhood finally wrapped last year. And this ambitious long-term venture, which has screened in competition at the Sydney Film Festival, has turned out to be an intimate and touching study of a boy's life.

As a six-year-old, Mason (unknown Ellar Coltrane) scraps with his older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater, the director's daughter) in the back of the family car. He lives with his devoted mother (Patricia Arquette), who is battling to start a new life after separating from his free-spirited father (Ethan Hawke).

As the years pass, Mason has to deal with new surrogate fathers, friends and eventually loves, as well as all the issues of growing up anywhere – troubles at home, moves, new schools, risk-taking, bullying, self-expression, responsibilities.

Where other filmmakers would switch actors or use make-up or digital effects to tell a story over 12 years, Coltrane just grows up on screen.
