OZschwitz: Statist school principal sues parent for defamation

A SYDNEY primary school principal is suing for defamation a parent who allegedly criticised her in an email sent to other parents.

The case, which is scheduled to appear in the NSW Supreme Court on August 14, has prompted the state's parents and citizens group to warn other parents to tread carefully when making complaints.

Rajaratnam Premachandran sent the email, titled "Call for Mrs Ryan to quit", to Mrs Ryan and 14 others. In it he allegedly questioned her leadership and the quality of education at Beecroft Primary School.

Both he and Mrs Ryan declined to comment yesterday.

The president of the NSW Federation of P&C Associations, Dianne Giblin, said Mr Premachandran's complaint was not shared by the wider parent community. "Parents need to be mindful that there are appropriate channels to make complaints," she said. "You need to make sure you are not attacking someone personally and not broadcasting it to a wider audience."

Mrs Giblin said parents should first approach the teacher or principal and then make a written complaint to the school education director if they want to take the matter further.

The president of the NSW Primary Principals' Association, Geoff Scott, said parents had the right to raise concerns with the principal and "through proper channels with other parents".

Mrs Ryan lodged a statement of claim for the defamation action in the Supreme Court of NSW last week.

The alleged defamation took place in April.

The NSW Department of Education declined to comment saying it was not involved in Mrs Ryan's civil action.
