A global recession has ripped the guts out of the car market and left normal folks wondering whether to pay the mortgage or feed the kids next month. But nobody told the insulated enclave of Monaco, the home of Europe's rich and famous and also Top Marques, the world's most glamorous car show.

Steven Saltzmann started the show 11 years ago, bringing together the customer lists of a Monaco private bank, Ferrari and a few others. It's firmly a buyer's show and it's aimed squarely at the top 1 per cent of society - the one with all the money.

Just 40,000 people attend the show, mostly invited guests. The likes of Horacio Pagani, the supremo of the Italian supercar maker of the same name, also drop by - because this is where all of his customers are.
