| Subject: Statists are responsible: 17,000 pupils suspended, 1,000 caught with weapons: is school violence rising in the UK? Tue Apr 29, 2014 5:58 am | |
| The tragic stabbing of teacher Anne Maguire in Leeds’ Corpus Christi College has raised questions about violence in UK schools. Are violent incidents rising?
It’s hard to tell but in short the number of suspensions for assaulting school staff have grown slightly in recent years but permanent expulsions for the same reason are down.
In 2011/12 schoolchildren were expelled or suspended on 17,520 occasions for physically assaulting adults, an equivalent of 90 incidents a day across the academic year.
According to the most recently available Department for Education figures in 2011/12 alone there were nearly 17,000 suspensions due to physical assault against an adult across all English state schools.
The number has dropped since 2006/07 but as a percentage of all suspensions the frequency has remained pretty much the same.
