| Subject: Destructive statism: Airbnb permanently removing over 2,000 New York listings which could be illegal Tue Apr 22, 2014 4:17 am | |
| n a Monday announcement, popular online home-rental marketplace Airbnb revealed that it is permanently wiping out over 2,000 New York listings which could be illegal. The hosts of the listings being removed by Airbnb can finish up their current bookings, but cannot accept any new reservations.
The announcement by Airbnb comes at a time when the rent-out-your-home service is entangled in a legal scuffle with New York State lawmakers. The move to remove the over 2,000 listings was announced by Airbnb a day ahead of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's Tuesday-scheduled appearance in court in New York's capital Albany.
Schneiderman's office claimed in a court filing on Monday that two-thirds of Airbnb's New York City listings are apparently violating the rules.
Pointing out that a 2011 New York state law prohibits subletting apartments for fewer than 30 days if residents are not present, Schneiderman's office said that entire apartments are offered by 64 percent of Airbnb listings, with nearly all having minimum stays of less than one month.
With a subpoena having been issued to Airbnb, the company has said it will extend full cooperation to New York lawmakers for wiping out illegal hotel operators and slumlords.
About Airbnb's Monday announcement to remove more than 2,000 New York listings, David Hantman - the company's head of public policy - said: "These hosts weren't making their neighborhood stronger and they weren't delivering the kind of hospitality our guests expect and deserve."

And fuck you too Airbnb, for being such gutless cowards and folding in record time.
