| If ever a brilliant car has been the victim of bad timing, the McLaren F1 was it. In the late 1980s, the world was supercar mad, spurred on mainly by Ferrari's success with its ultra-exey F40 supercar (from 1987) and the extraordinary reaction to the Jaguar XJ220.
This ''220mph super coupe'' was shown as a prototype in 1988. Although it suffered from a certain portliness and from being built by Jaguar, the promise was that it would be very exclusive and very collectable.
Only 350 were to be made, yet no fewer than 1500 people were prepared to pay a huge deposit for a £470,000 car that was still a few years away.
