Talk about overreacting. A St. Louis area mother was arrested last week at her own son's elementary school after rushing there to console him following a panic attack. Niakea Williams, whose son suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, failed to do the requisite signing-in at the front desk of Walnut Grove Elementary, the punishment for which was being handcuffed and taken away by police.

Adding insult to injury, area news reports, the school was put on "lockdown" as if a predator were on the loose:

After getting the call, Williams came and was buzzed in by school officials. She got to her son's classroom and immediately started to console him. Then the school principal informed her she violated school policy by not signing in. Calverton Park Police responded to the call that came out as an 'unauthorized entry to a school.' The school was also put on a 12-minute lockdown and a letter was sent home to parents.

Williams, who is a known parent at the school, explained what went down before being arrested on trespassing charges:

Quote :: I didn't sign the book, but I had to check on my son. You can bring me the book, she said 'oh no, I've already called the police.' You called what?
They escorted me away from my son, who already has emotional distress. Four officers told me to turn around and put my hands behind my back, I was under arrest.

"I feel like today I got arrested for being a concerned parent of my child," Williams added, agreeing with a local reporter that greater discretion is sorely needed at the school.

Williams's arrest seems to be the result of a larger trend, that of increased police presences at America's schools. Many view school police or security guards as essential after events like the Sandy Hook massacre.

But that means we'll continue to hear news reports of parents being arrested by over-zealous officers, like Tennessee dad Jim Howe, who was arrested in 2013 by a school safety officer for trying to collect his kids on foot instead of by car. Like Williams, Howe was outraged - as you would be if you were a parent arrested for simply attempting to perform normal acts of care for your children.
