The practice of covering fire hydrants with bitumen during roadworks has emerged as a "fire risk" and "lunacy", according to the union representing the state's fire fighters.

Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services confirmed a memorandum of understanding existed between the two organisations.

It is now common practice for road crews to temporarily cover fire hydrants on the road and return weeks later to uncover them, reportedly because it is cheaper.
