| A senior bureaucrat in the Department of Family and Community Services charged with improving child protection has admitted young people in care were still suffering sexual and physical abuse by their carers.
The admission came as the Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse heard that the NSW Government was examining a redress scheme for victims of state-run institutions.
Kate Alexander, executive director of the department’s office of the senior practitioner, told the commission that fewer than five children had died due to physical abuse in care in the past year. Advertisement
Giving evidence into the hearing into the state-run Parramatta Girls Training School and the Institution for Girls, Hay, Ms Alexander said she was reassured the state government was considering redress for victims and needed to learn from its mistakes.
