| Subject: Get Down & Dirty: Antibacterial Soaps May Pose Health Risk, FDA Says Mon Dec 16, 2013 10:10 pm | |
| There appears to be little or no evidence that antibacterial soaps and household products help prevent us from being exposed to germs, and they may even pose significant health risks, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in a proposed rule change today.
The chemicals used in the products, particularly triclosan and triclocarban, have come under fire as a result of research showing they may be aiding the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria as well as disrupting hormone levels, particularly in women and children. In fact, some experts have called the antibacterial chemicals a public health threat. In a previous article for Forbes, I highlighted research showing that triclocarban may be dangerous for nursing babies. The concern was based on the fact that triclocarban is an endocrine disruptor that changes the way hormones function in the body, with potentially long-lasting consequences.
