| Motorbikes, as a rule, are significantly cheaper than cars. But just as there are cars and then there are supercars, bikes also have a pecking order and somewhere near the very top sits one of the most expensive production sports bikes on the planet, the Bimota DB8 Oro Nero.
How expensive? Well, there are BMWs that are cheaper. And not base ones, either.
Only eight of the circa-$90,000 machines are being produced this year, two of which are offered for sale in Australia. Oro Nero translates as 'black gold', a nod to the exotic handmade carbon-fibre weave almost everywhere you look. It's used in the construction of the frame, swingarm, sub-frame and fairing.
Italian-based Bimota has a history of selecting the best engines from anywhere in the world for the bespoke chassis it builds, and some of its most successful models have used Japanese-sourced engines. However, the Oro Nero is an all-Italian affair with a 1198cc v-twin heart from Ducati's Bologna plant, located just 121km from Bimota's coastal base at Rimini. Advertisement
With 127kW (170hp), a prodigious 127Nm of torque and a claimed dry weight of 159kg, the Oro Nero begins to justify its sticker price with awesome power-to-weight ratio.
Top shelf Öhlins forks are a Swedish donation to the DB8 Oro Nero cause, while the all-titanium shock absorber at the rear comes from Italian suspension specialist, Extreme Racing Shox. It's a curious choice but it makes the Oro Nero that little bit more exclusive.
