PERSONAL trainers could be facing fines for operating in Gold Coast parks with the council preparing to crack down on the fitness industry.

A plan to regulate the industry by introducing a permit system and registration fees was defeated after councillors clashed over the issue for more than 90 minutes during the fiery final council meeting of the year.

The lack of permit system now leaves personal training groups vulnerable, with council local laws banning commercial businesses from operating on city-owned land without a permit.
