I’ve been drawn to the Libertarian Party for the last couple of months, but I haven’t joined it because I disagree with some of the Libertarian Party’s positions. Some of those I could live with, but there’s one issue that I can’t, because I believe it contradicts libertarian philosophy.

On the issue of abortion, the Libertarian Party says this:

   “Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.”

I argue that the Libertarian Party should actually be the most vocal in demanding an end to abortion, in order to stay philosophically consistent.

In order to understand why Libertarians should be against abortion, we must go back to our founding ideals, laid out in the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Both libertarians and conservatives believe that we all have these rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness, and that no one can take those rights away. They are given to us by our Creator, and it is not man’s prerogative to take them away.

But now here comes the problem of abortion. Abortion, by definition, is an infringement on someone’s right to live. It is a cessation of that young life. Without life, none of the other rights we cherish matter. You cannot enjoy the Right of Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness without the foundation of the Right of Life.

The goal of the Libertarian Party is to “defend the rights of the individual,” according to their Statement of Principles. If the Libertarian Party wants to uphold that claim, they should protect the rights of the unborn and call for an end to abortion.
