Tennis tears as police spray fans

AN UGLY confrontation between Greek tennis fans and Victorian police - in which about 30 people, including children, were affected by capsicum spray - marred the second night of the Australian Open in Melbourne last night.

The incident occurred during a match between Greece's Konstantinos Economidis and the highly ranked Chilean Fernando Gonzalez about 8.30pm.

Play was stopped for eight minutes after police discharged capsicum spray in a Greek section of the crowd at the outdoor Margaret Court Arena. The spray drifted across the court, affecting the players. "It was unpleasant for us," said Economidis, who eventually lost the match. "This has never happened before." The confrontation began, fans said, after police targeted noisy Greek supporters who were chanting for their player. "There was no need for them to spray us," Nick Zoukis, said. "We were just cheering. There was no racial tension with the Chilean fans, nothing at all."

A Southbank man, Glenn, who declined to give his last name, said he was sitting with neither the Greeks nor the Chileans but "saw the whole thing unfold." A Greek cheerleader was standing up, chanting, he said.

Police asked him to sit down and be quiet. However, when he refused, police threatened him with eviction, Glenn said.

The Greek cheer squad joined in the argument and the police retreated, but later retaliated with capsicum spray.

Elena Arapu, of Noble Park, said she and her friends were sitting with the Greek cheer squad and were sprayed in the face. "Everyone was running for the exits," she said. "Me and my friend, we were sprayed, we couldn't breathe, they tried to throw us out. All they were doing was chanting."

The Australian Open was marred by racial violence last year when Serbian and Croatian fans clashed. Last night Chilean and Greek fans denied there were any racial tensions.
