| Police have been accused of price gouging Australia's biggest concert promoters by running an unchecked monopoly on event security, resulting in higher ticket prices.
The promoters, led by Chugg Entertainment, are secretly lobbying the NSW government for change, claiming they are being ripped off on fees for concerts and festivals.
A series of police invoices, obtained in a Fairfax Media investigation, show that police fees can vary significantly.
The lobbying began after a Mumford and Sons concert in Dungog last year drew a crowd of 1800 people and a $30,000 policing bill - the same amount inner-city police would later charge for a Coldplay concert that drew 50,000 people. Advertisement
Police revenue from user-pays events has increased from $5.5 million in 2007-08 to $8.5 million last financial year.
