A Sydney hospital has apologised to the family of a teenage girl who is in a serious condition after spending nine hours lying in pain on the floor of the emergency department with appendicitis because a bed could not be found for her.

Demi Ellul initially went home from the hospital on Monday night after she was left lying on the floor in the freezing cold when no beds were available, despite suffering appendicitis.

   She was doubled over in pain and was freezing cold.

But late on Thursday afternoon the hospital confirmed Demi was now in a serious condition, but would give out no further information on when her condition had worsened.
