| Subject: Becoming Human review: Finn's outlook a sunny one Sun Aug 04, 2013 1:54 am | |
| It seems Clare Bowditch started something last year with her album The Winter I Chose Happiness. Jim Finn, of the rather good electro-rock band Art Vs Science, has taken Bowditch to heart, his solo album a decided choice to seek out the happy, sunny and outright pretty. That much of it was written while he was undergoing dialysis after a kidney transplant (from his dad) seems counterintuitive if you assume the discomfort, boredom and chance of ongoing problems might depress you.
In any case, Becoming Human is one of those albums where you come bouncing out of each listen. Gonna Make It has the spring of the Jackson 5 meeting Ben Folds Five - it's like a Saturday morning when you were 10 and everything was totally amazing. Hurricane feels like you're 13 and hanging about the local pool in mid-January. Elsewhere, Bare Feet opens with a keyboard sound straight from an early Cars single and a melody made for afternoon television; the title track drifts charmingly and Long Long Day gets a little power-pop crunchy while not ever losing the dreamy gauze over the voice. Speaking of dreamy, Finn isn't afraid to go yacht rock either: Little Things is Hall & Oates smooth with piano and synth vamps and a handclap rhythm underneath. And why not? Finn has chosen happiness.
