| The protection of heritage buildings in NSW would be jeopardised and the Heritage Council rendered a ''toothless tiger'' under a proposal to transfer planning powers to bureaucrats, conservation advocates warn.
The NSW government has proposed giving the head of the Planning Department the power to approve development applications involving buildings and other sites listed on the State Heritage Register.
The Heritage Council would effectively become a toothless tiger.
Conservationists fear the move would sideline the Heritage Council, which currently makes these decisions and was actively involved in preserving Sydney's heritage assets, such as the original sandstone structure of the GPO at Martin Place and the industrial character of Woolloomooloo wharf.
Other protected heritage buildings have included Sydney Town Hall, St Andrew's Cathedral and the Prince Henry Hospital at Little Bay.
