The Art Gallery of NSW's new director Michael Brand has unveiled his first major acquisition: a multimillion-dollar pop artwork by his friend Ed Ruscha.

The 1972 work by the 75-year-old Los Angeles artist was purchased with funds that were contributed by the Art Gallery Society to celebrate the appointment of Dr Brand, and matched by Ruscha, who lowered the purchase price of the piece.

''For me, it is the perfect exemplar of his one-word paintings,'' Dr Brand said. ''It reflects his lifelong fascination with words, their meaning and their representation.''

Dr Brand said Gospel, which had been in the artist's personal collection, had a special status among his one-word paintings.

''With Gospel, Ruscha moved beyond mainstream pop,'' he said.

Dr Brand said Gospel would enhance the gallery's collection of international contemporary art and furthered his goal of building stronger ties with art practice in California. It will be part of the gallery's Pop to Popism exhibition next year.
