| IT may have stripped the gloss from yesterday's Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles but the Hollywood writers strike was not going to stop the porn industry from going full steam ahead with their own Academy Awards. Breast enlargements, collagen lip injections and underwear as outer-wear were de rigueur for the more than 5000 film stars and producers who strutted the red carpet in Las Vegas over the weekend for the 25th Adult Movie Awards, dubbed the Oscars of porn.
About 12,000 porn films were made in the US last year, and award selectors had the unenviable task of viewing about 8000 for selection in categories such as "best tease".
"It's a very long, horrible process," Paul Fishbein, publisher of Adult Video News, told reporters. "It is a lot of watching." Many of the stars lamented the difficulty of gaining recognition. "It's a thankless business," said Evan Stone, 43, who was named best actor. "You don't get a lot of feedback." For others the awards provide credibility to the industry. "We've come out of the woodwork," said Randy Spears, 46, a 22-year porn-film veteran. "Our audience is not the raincoat crowd anymore."
