| Remember gobbling up properties on the Monopoly board, and driving your opponents to bankruptcy? So well known is the board game's keynote phrase, ''Go directly to Jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $200'', it has become shorthand for a situation of utter loss.
While Monopoly hasn't lost traction since it was published in 1935, in a new generation of games co-operation rather than capitulation is the name of the game.
Demand for the new crop of board games is driven by anxiety among parents worried their children are spending too much time playing video games and keen to interact with their children in a constructive way, according to the chairman of Boardgames Australia, Richard Vickery. The new games, says Vickery, are big on participation, encourage involvement of players of all ages with an ideal game time of about an hour.
